The Pencil Tin offers individual tuition and group workshops for both students and adults. We specialise in traditional, ‘first-principles’ processes and hands-on skills using pencils, pens, brushes, paper and textiles. These foundation skills are applicable across all design and creative disciplines and technologies. We can also teach computer or software skills if they are specifically requested by individual students.
As a design and make studio, we recognise that good design is only the critical first step toward actually making your creative ideas into physical objects or spaces. We are not a fabrication workshop but we do have a wide range of simple hand tools and considerable experience across many materials and processes to advise you and help develop your projects, be they furniture, toys, decorations, artworks, models, homewares, etc.
Our Major Work Mentoring offering is quite different to individual tuition. Higher School Certificate students of Visual Arts or Design & Technology have very specific objectives they must comply with and clearly defined deadlines they must meet, yet their creative brief is commonly quite broad in scope. This can unfortunately sometimes lead to uncertainty, confusion, unnecessary stress and a loss of creative enjoyment.
We aim to bring back the pleasure for which they first embarked on their chosen subjects, by encouraging their creative exploration, providing friendly motivation for lagging spirits, helping them set achievable goals, assisting them to acquire new skills, advising them on appropriate processes and materials and even optimising outcomes with simple suggestions for presentation or display of their completed works.
$25 per hour, at the student’s home or in The Pencil Tin studio.
Individual tuition can be tailored to suit personal needs and desired creative outcomes. We can provide inspiration, motivation and improved knowledge and skillsets for secondary or tertiary students plus enthusiastic adults, either at The Pencil Tin studio or in your own home.
We provide assistance across many Creative Arts and Technology subject areas including: Drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, theatre, design, drafting, printing, installations, mixed-media, colour theory, costume, textiles, problem-solving, etc.
$25 per hour, excluding materials. (Prices for digital media tuition on application.)
One-day group workshops (10am to 2pm, including light refreshments) can be arranged upon request, up to a maximum of ten participants. We can offer a range of hands-on topics using different media, skills and creative methodologies. Why not get a group of friends together and approach us with ideas or desires for a customised workshop?
$75 per student, excluding materials.
Our ‘Working With Children Check’ numbers are available on request for verification purposes.
